Join the Canada Chapter for an informative presentation on the AIPN Model Joint Operating Agreement and the CAPL Model Joint Operating Agreement. The event will feature a comparison of the AIPN Model JOA versus the CAPL Model JOA and will also identify potential areas of improvement in the AIPN Model JOA.
Jim Maclean joined Chevron after graduating from Dalhousie Law School and had extensive experience with agreements in Western Canada, the Canadian frontiers and with respect to A&D before leaving Chevron in 2005. He assumed his current role at Repsol in 2009 after an intervening period in a consulting practice that specialized in training, problem resolution and the negotiation of complex agreements.
Jim is best known for his work as the principal draftsman of the 1990 CAPL Operating Procedure and the subsequent 2007 and 2015 updates, as well as being the principal draftsman of the 1997 and 2015 CAPL Farmout & Royalty Procedure and the 2000 and pending 2017 CAPL Property Transfer Procedure.
Jim is an instructor of a number of industry courses on those documents, has been a guest lecturer in the University of Calgary land program since 1991 and is often invited to speak at industry events.
Frank Alexander’s practice is focused on the international energy industry, and includes: government petroleum contracts (such as PSAs), petroleum legislation and regulations, foreign investment laws, bilateral investment treaties and multi-lateral arbitral enforcement treaties, international JOAs, transfers of interest, gas contracts, cross-border (international) unitization, and other international energy matters. He has assisted with international energy projects in Europe, Asia, Africa, South America, Central America, the Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and the former Soviet Union.
In addition to his international energy work for clients, Frank teaches international petroleum contracts and negotiations at in-house courses for clients, seminars and universities around the world. Frank is also the author of several books and articles on international energy law.
Frank has also served as an arbitration counsel, has been called upon to serve as an arbitrator, and regularly acts as an expert witness in connection with international arbitration and court proceedings regarding international petroleum contract matters.
