Join the Latin America Regional Chapter for a breakfast meeting and presentation on "Promoting Offshore O&G Investments: Brazil Case." In recent years, the offshore oil and gas industry has been adapting to a new scenario of oil prices. Despite the increasing number of oil and gas reserves offshore, hydrocarbons regulators and oil companies continue to work to rebalance national regulation and contract terms to develop offshore projects, in order to set forth the regulatory framework that will govern these long-term investments.
The case of Brazil deserves a close analysis given the country’s efforts to develop the offshore oil industry. Today, Brazil produces more than 1 million bpd from offshore projects, which represents more than a half of the domestic production. Since July 2017, production from pre-salt wells surpassed the combined volumes from all other fields in the country. Indeed, the Brazilian experience is currently observed and studied closely by other countries in the region, such as Mexico and Colombia, which are making efforts to develop offshore exploration and production.
Brazilian endeavors have taken domestic production to become the biggest oil producer in Latin America with a production of 2.6 million bpd, one of the fourth major offshore producers in the world, among the U.S., Norway and Angola, and also is the ninth oil producer in the World.
The presentation will focus on the challenges faced by the Brazilian oil industry in recent years in order to keep developing the offshore oil industry regardless of critical scenarios.
Magda Chambriard is the Former President of the Brazilian Petroleum Agency (ANP) and Energy Visiting Scholar at the University of Houston. During Mrs. Chambriard tenure in front of the ANP Brazil’s oil production increased from 2 Million bpd to 2.5 Million bpd based mostly on offshore oil production.
