Recently the US Trade Representative released its 2017 Trade Policy Agenda and 2016 Annual Report. Among other top priorities, the Trump Administration’s new trade policy emphasizes the strict enforcement of US trade laws, the use of leverage to encourage other countries to open their markets to US exports, and the re-negotiation of trade deals. In addition, the policy emphasizes that World Trade Organization dispute settlement reports are not binding or self-executing, and that WTO rulings do not automatically lead to a change in US law or practice. In this session we will discuss how recent shifts in trade policy will impact the petroleum industry and international trade as a whole. We will use case studies to illustrate the practical effect of these changes for global companies.
