In the run-up to COP 26, there is an ever increasing worldwide focus on Net Zero and the Energy Transition. In terms of upstream oil and gas projects it is accepted that these concepts play a key role in the decommissioning of offshore installations. In regulatory terms therefore, questions are being asked. How are licensees best advised to prepare for decommissioning? How is decommissioning best carried out so as limit emissions? What role should Net Zero and Transition considerations play in the decision to decommission itself? Last month, Australia has amended its Petroleum Law to greatly extend the decommissioning obligations of oil companies, and earlier this year, the UK placed Net Zero at the heart of the amended MER Strategy, including decommissioning. On the other hand, many African producers are heavily dependent on fossil fuels economically and are keen to maintain or increase hydrocarbon production. This is a complex and challenging panorama.
Organised by the Europe Chapter (Scotland section) this webinar will feature an impressive panel of speakers who will share their views on these momentous international and national issues. Leon Moller of RGU will speak to these issues in the context of Angola and other African jurisdictions. Tina Soliman Hunter, who teaches at Macquarie University in Australia and has a specialist interest in oil and gas decommissioning will cover the dynamic situation in Australia. Jim Christie from Aberdeen will give his views of the direction of travel in the UK.
Each talk will last up to 30 minutes. There will then be Q&A of up to 45 minutes. Laura Petrie of Brodies LLP will chair proceedings and Vanessa Castillo, also of Brodies LLP will coordinate Q&A.
